Planting The Triangle

Exciting news!!! Our first phase of planting will soon be underway. NYC Parks has graciously agreed to perform the planting and have also been working with us on a few design choices. During this initial planting, we have one goal.... get an imprint down to better the original conditions (and let's face it, we can vastly improve what was there before). We must work within available NYC Park resources as we also begin to consider our own fund-raising needs to work towards executing our own design decisions. Simply said, let's get an improvement, and evolve it as the Friends of Barnett Newman Triangle group and resources grow.
We've worked through four options and have landed on Option #2.
Reasonings for Option #2 were many fold: a larger variety of plantings, each one with slightly different blooming time frames, variation in colors throughout the year, maintainability, and resiliency & durability. We also wanted a small vertical feature for depth and centering. Plantings include: Blue Arrow Junipers, Echinacea (white & green), Mexican Feather Grasses, Hakonechloa, and Salvia.
NYC Parks is in the process of gathering these, and depending upon availability and health of the plants, we may see some variations. For now, a basic perimeter fence will go into place to keep people from walking over the area, and we will likely upgrade in the future as the foundational plantings take hold and as the space evolves. Two new park benches will also be tethered to the north end of the triangle and a trash receptacle will also be added.
There are more plans for above ground planters as well to include taller trees and other flowering plants, but we are still in the process of determining these...again with an evolution in mind as well as budget.
More to come, but for now, a plan and work will begin soon.
If you can, consider a contribution to help with this and other improvements. Every penny counts, and this project will be fully community resourced.
