Volunteers Make Our Triangle Work - Watering Steps

Thank you once again for volunteering your time to water the Triangle. The Roxy Hotel has graciously allowed us access to their equipment and water source until we can secure something permanent.

You may need to improvise as the conditions warrant. Penpa, one of the primary contacts, arrives weekdays at 7:00 am and ideally the watering is completed by 10:00 am to avoid heavy foot traffic. In our practice run, the whole process took about 30 minutes. We promised the Roxy that we will try to coordinate our schedules in advance with them to make it most efficient for all.

Some Hotel names you might want to know, all in one place: Ricardo Gonzalez - Hotel Manager,  David - Morning Security; Nicole - Evening Security; Penpa - Houseman

01

Gain Access

Start off by going to the Roxy Security office. It is an unmarked black door located on Church St, very near the corner of Church and Walker.  If you push the buzzer they will let you in.  You may need to identify yourself as a volunteer to water the Triangle garden.

02

Get the Water Key

Once you enter the security area, go to the glass window and tell them you are there to water the Triangle. David sits behind the glass window and works most mornings and will be able to hand you the key. If Penpa is available (a houseman who does most of the Roxy's plant watering) he may set it all up for you.

Access The Hose

Either Penpa (he is seen here in the picture) will get it set up for you, or you will need to ask for access to the loading dock (located just around the corner on Walker St) from the security office. The hose is set up on a roller cart. Penpa also has the all important water nozzle (seen here). He keeps it in a separate location because it is valuable.  He will need to get it for you. The ideal setting for watering is shown in the photo.

04

Connect Hose to Water Source

The water spigot is located near the front of the hotel, closer to the Church St side (just near the bike racks). It is within a small stainless steel box. Connect the small black hose that is attached to the roller cart and tighten it as much as you can with your bare hands. Insert and turn the key (there are 4 key heads, only one of them fits the spigot) to get the water running.

05

Rollout the Hose - Be Super Cautious - Don't Cause a Trip Hazard

We must be very cautious with the hose.  There are a lot of hotel guests and pedestrians nearby.  Please always give them the right-of-way. Run the hose along the street gutter so it isn't as much of a tripping hazard.

06

Let's Get Things Wet

You cannot overwater these plants. HOWEVER, watering their leafs or blooms should be avoided. A combination of the water and the sun can cause damage to the plants leafs and blooms, so do the best you can to water the dirt itself. Water all areas of the beds.

Return the Hose, Key & Nozzle

The Roxy has been gracious enough to allow us to use their equipment and water. Please be a good neighbor/borrower and return everything in better condition than you received it. Either tell Penpa you are done or roll the hose back to the loading dock and tell them you are done (don't leave it there without informing someone). Remove the nozzle and make sure it gets back to Penpa.
