Celebrating Community

A triangle can be a powerful symbol. Over the millennia, the triangle's symbolism has been multifaceted often representing concepts like balance, strength, ascension, and even the divine.

Today, Pride weekend in Manhattan, we wanted to take a moment and celebrate its symbolism of strength, resilience, community and progress and briefly reflect on it's history.

LGBTQ+ Symbol of Community

An upside-down pink triangle had a dark history born out of Nazi Germany where it was a concentration camp badge used to identify gay men and those perceived as homosexual. Initially intended as a symbol of shame, in the 1970's it was reclaimed to become a symbol of LGBTQ+ liberation, and a positive symbol of both self- and community identity. It was in the 1970's that the pink triangle was turned right-side-up, and since then, it has been a powerful symbol of the LGBTQ+ community.

Our Friends of Barnett Newman Triangle logo is new, but also comes with a history and reflects back to a time in the United States with significant social, political, and cultural upheaval, often described as a time of both great hope and profound division. Our logo is a reflection of one of the few Barnett Newman's triangular paintings, specifically, Jericho (1969). Described by Newman as possessing a sense of dramatic power and potential for transformation and direction. Of course, updated with a nod towards nature, greenspaces and art. It also incorporated the design and flow of the eventual greenspace, to provide a welcoming pathway through the space. Special thanks for it's design and production go to Lisa @rosette512

Happy Pride!
